Earth Day In Oak Park
If you are at all familiar with my work you will be aware that for several years now I have been incorporating the use of re-claimed, salvaged, up-cycled wools and fabrics into my one-of-a-kind art to wear. It is fun to create new designs using items that would otherwise be discarded. Giving new life to out of date, out of style fashions. Fashion by its very nature is not very ecological. Let’s face it, we’ve been saturated by a culture that pushes the latest, greatest look. And as a designer it is not possible to not get caught up in trying to create the next greatest item or look. But as a society we need to become socially responsible. Sort of a double bind, as they say. So, by re-using items already in the waste stream I have tried to solve that dilemma for myself. I have a wonderful relationship with the Economy Shop in Oak Park. They put aside items that have moth holes, been previously shrunk or are otherwise unsellable in their resale shop. I purchase them for a reduced cost, giving them an income from something they would otherwise discard. And I get wonderful wools and cashmeres to play and design with! What could be more earth friendly?
Anyway, back to Earth Day. I remember way back in the 70’s when I was a child our community celebrated Earth Day with a Community Clean Up. The Scout Troups and other local organizations would get together carrying garbage bags and clean up the town. We had a nice local re-cycling center too. Fast forward to several years ago when I started creating the salvaged wool garments, I publicized an ‘Earth Day’ Sale. There really wasn’t much going on around the area for Earth Day activities at the time. Well this year I am happy to report that Oak Park is having a wonderful Earth Fest Event and a great list of activities as part of the event. Please go HERE for a map and more information!
Saturday April 24th, from 1:00-3:00pm I will be demonstrating the “Art of Needle-felting”. This is one of the many ways I add embellishment to old woolens to give them New Life! Please stop in – you will have an opportunity to try it for yourself! And please continue to celebrate Earth Day! It is our mother-ship and will need to remain healthy for centuries beyond our short time here. Leave a legacy of care, respect and appreciation of the beauty the world gives. Our future generations deserve the same wonderful “ship” to call home!
